The phone was still in working order.
Ireland is modernising in a very quick pace, will this phone booth still be there in a few years? I hope so, because this kind of thing really contributes to the Irish atmosphere.

399. Usually I'm not so much interested in creating a true image of reality. With this picture the exposure was intentionally measured from the clouds. That creates the atmosphere that you can still find in the west of Ireland. This picture was taken from the same position as the previous one. With a different lens and a different exposure you can create a totally different mood.

During my holidays in Ireland I read "Mccarthy's Bar" by Pete Mccarthy. This is the best book about modern Ireland I've read so far. A must.

225. The solution to the problem in picture nr. 224. The shadows in the previous picture are parallel in reality. It’s the working of perspective, exaggerated by the use of a wide angle lens. In picture 223 they look almost parallel. The verges of the road are also parallel but still it looks like the road is getting narrower. The trees are also roughly the same size. In today's photograph we see the same phenomenon. The rays seem to diverge but in reality they are parallel. The hole in the clouds is much further away than the point where the rays meet the earth.
The next joke illustrates the whole problem in one sentence:
As the stoker said to the engine driver: "STOP the train, the tracks are getting narrower"

A good composition is according to me the most important part of photography. Unfortunately there are not many photography sites that deal with this matter. This is the flat peat landscape of Donegal. A small tree adjusted itself to the strong wind from the west. The colourful plastic bags in the background contain peat. The Irish on the westcoast still use a lot of peat for heating their houses. You can smell the distinct odour of the smoke everywhere. There still is a peat-fired power station in Ireland. An Irishman said to me once:

With Ireland I have a love-hate relationship. With bad weather it is really bad, rain, fog and a cold wind. Still Ireland has a very mild climate. A nice example of how misleading a photograph can be. This evening scene looks very peaceful. A fishing boat sailing into the sunset. It looks like the end scene of a B-film. The crew of the boat was very glad to go out to sea, because the insects wouldn't bother them as much there.

18. Fortunately it rains a lot in Ireland ;-) so you can enjoy the sunshine even more. Here too the colours yellow and blue enhance each other. This picture is divided into 3 areas: The blue gate, the yellow field and the blue sky. Because of the gate in the foreground there is more depth in the picture. The focus is on the foreground. In picture nr. 7 there are also 3 areas, but there the focus is in the middle area.

12. "Water nr. 1"
Water is colourless. (Except when something is dissolved in it, minerals for instance) Water reflects the light that falls on it. It's blue when the sky is blue and grey when the sky is grey. When there are waves, it's reflecting under different angles, that way different shades can be seen. In this picture you can see the transformed reflections of the blue sky and the white clouds. Because there's never 100% reflection, the colour in the water is darker. (see picture nr. 11)

8. This picture too was taken during an overcast sky.
This is what I mean by ZenZien, ZenMiru.
An ugly old drinking trough overgrown with moss can be very beautiful.
