108. "Snow and ice nr. 9"
The Gullfoss (golden waterfall) is beautiful in summer, but in winter it's really spectacular. The small dots in the righthand top corner are people.

107. "Snow and ice nr. 8"
Snow is most of the time difficult to photograph. The lightmeter "sees" a lot of light and tells you to use a smaller diaphraghm and/or a slower shutterspeed. With an automatic camera this obviously goes automatically. That's why the picture will turn out to dark. So don't always believe your lightmeter, in this case you have to overexpose. The skimming light in this picture and the surface texture still give some pattern to the snow.

105. "Snow and ice nr. 6"
This photograph was taken in February, it's very cold then in the Canadian prairie provinces.
The picture was taken from the Trans-Canada Highway which runs east-west. The road in the picture is running north-south. Almost every road in Canada runs either north-south or east-west. Through the village runs the railroad parallel to the Highway, and along the railroad are the grain silos. Around the village the vast farmlands. This village is very typical of the Canadian prairie villages.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PHOTOGRAPH.

104. "Sun nr. 17" and "Trees nr. 13"
The sun has just risen, it's shining through the steam that is escaping from the volcanic cracks in the ground. The trees make shadows on the steam.

103. "Sun nr. 16"
The sun is at the topleft just outside the picture frame. The strong light causes a lot of reflections inside the optical system of the lens, which lowers the contrast considerably. It gives the photograph a soft fairy-tale like light.

102. "Sun nr. 15" and "Snow and ice nr. 5"
This picture was taken with Kodachrome 64, a slidefilm. Slidefilm can handle only a small contrast. That means that the dark parts are going to look even darker and the light parts are going to look lighter. Fortunately there was a haze in the sky which tempered the sun. Also the reflection of the snow makes the contrast lower. Everything was hoarfrosted. |

101. "Sun nr. 14"
The small rainbow on the right is called parhelion, also called mock sun or sundog. There was also one on the left side. It's actually an incomplete halo.
For a picture of a halo see photograph nr. 17 in ARCHIVES of June.

100. "Sun nr. 13" and "Trees nr. 12"
This was going to be the coldest night I ever experienced; minus 38 degrees centigrade (which is also about 38 below zero in Fahrenheit) When I took this picture it was already very cold. At very low temperatures the working of the camera gets very stiff. The film gets so brittle that it can break easily.

With Ireland I have a love-hate relationship. With bad weather it is really bad, rain, fog and a cold wind. Still Ireland has a very mild climate. With good weather it becomes the most beautiful country in Europe. I always have the feeling that Ireland is the real Hobbit country, if one would meet Frodo and company on the westcoast one wouldn't be surprised.

95. "Sun nr. 8"
Enough water for the time being, it's time for some sun. This picture was taken early in the morning. The stareffect of the sun is because I used the smallest diaphragm. The dark foreground is not so very interesting by itself, but the reflecting track adds some depth to the picture.

94. "Water nr. 16" and "Sun nr. 7" and "People nr. 4"
By Dutch standards it's quite a plain picture. A road made of bricks, an old man on a bicycle and a straight horizon with a totally flat landscape is something typically Dutch. I try to to see Holland with the eyes of somebody who is in our country for the first time. |

93. "Water nr. 15" and "People nr. 3"
This picture is technically far from perfect, still I want to show it because it conveys the atmosphere very well. It was heavily clouded during a downpour and under the trees there was hardly any light. In Holland we associate rain with cold weather but here it was over 30 degrees centigrade, that's why the cameralens was slightly fogged. The very busy street with thousands of cyclists and pedestrians was almost deserted within a minute. I used a Kodachrome slide film with ISO 64. This is not an ideal film for low light situations. The camera was handheld and I used a large aperture with a long shutterspeed.
