74. "Autumn nr 7"
After a beautiful clear autumn day there came later in the afternoon a beautiful haze over the landscape. In the previous picture the sun was hidden behind the clouds, but in this picture the sun was still shining, that's why it has a warmer feeling.

73. "Autumn nr. 6"
The tower of Loenen on the river Vecht. The picture was taken across one of the lakes in Loosdrecht. With weather like this almost all colour disappears from the landscape, especially when a telephoto lens is used. A huge contrast with the previous picture.

67. "Boats nr. 7" and "Sun nr. 5"
A nice example of how misleading a photograph can be. This evening scene looks very peaceful. A fishing boat sailing into the sunset. It looks like the end scene of a B-film. In reality I almost got eaten by the midges, small insects that swarm with millions around your head. The crew of the boat was very glad to go out to sea, because the insects wouldn't bother them as much there.

65. Northern Lights in Iceland in February 2000, this picture was taken from a tripod with a 1600 ISO film. Picture nr. 2 in ARCHIVES (May) was taken in August 1999 with a 100 ISO film. A 1600 ISO film shows a lot more grain, but is a lot faster (needs a lot less light) For instance if you need a shutterspeed of 1/30 of a second with 100 ISO you can use 1/500 of a second with 1600 ISO. Or if you need a diafragm of f2,8 with 100 ISO you can use f11 with 1600 ISO.

64. "Boats nr. 5" and "People nr. 2"
This picture was taken from a tripod because of the fairly long shutterspeed. The three boys kept moving around and were almost never in the right place for a good composition, so I had to wait for a long time to get them in the right place. It was getting darker very quickly. The sun had set for quite a while already. The reflection of the clouds tinted by the sun can be seen in the water. |

61. I wanted to show a series of boats, but this picture of a small fishing town on the Faroe Islands has to be shown first. There is a nice story to tell about it. Alex the designer of this site sent a mail to Henrik Petersen of EchoEchoPlus Hosting (that is the Danish server of this site) Henrik, just by chance, looks at the picture that is shown under BACKGROUND. He gets a big surprise, because he knows the spot very well, his parents and ancestors grew up there and as a boy he spent lots of holidays rowing on the fiord. |

Boat in Granville's harbour. With lowtide this harbour is dry. The shadow made by the embankment makes a good background for the sunlit ropes. The rope without direct sunlight is almost invisible. |

59. "Boats nr. 1"
On the beach you can find all kinds of things, but fishing boats of this size you don't see very often. On this Danish beach the boats are pulled ashore when not in use. The camera position is just above beach level. On some lenses you can see coloured lines and the diafragm numbers are also coloured. First I focused on the boats. The distance I read on the lens I turned to the coloured line with the same colour as the highest diaphragm number (this is the smallest opening) If you turn the diaphragm to the smallest opening, you have achieved maximum depth-of-field. On zoomlenses the lines are curved, because the more tele the less depth-of-field. |

After every high tide the stone pattern has changed slightly. When we came back to this spot a few years later, the shape of the wooden structures had changed dramatically.
