People smoked a lot.
The penetrating smell of the soviet cigarette is something I will never forget.
Drinking was also a hobby.
We rode on our coach through a small village.
It was late afternooon and there were a lot of drunk men in the street.
I asked our guide if there were problems with alcoholics.
The answer: "They are not alcoholics, they only drink a lot"

When taking this picture an old woman tapped me on the shoulder. She pointed at the ugly sovjet tenement blocks at the other side of the street. Thát's what I should take a picture of, thát was progress. I just pretended I took a picture of that too.

Every time I was very surprised how easy it was to get people to pose for a picture.
Even when I didn't ask and they found out, it was usually not a problem.
Photography was quite popular in the USSR.
They were often very interested in my Nikon.
