57. "Stone nr. 6"
Here you can see almost to the inch how high the tide is coming. This picture was taken more than 15 years ago. If we ever go back to Wales, I'll try to find this beach again. I wonder if there will be any visible difference in erosion then. |

56. "Stone nr. 5"
Beautiful erosion on a Welsh beach. One wonders how many centuries the waves and the sand have been collaborating to grind these round shapes. |

53. A little closer to home this time. Beaches are among my favourite spots for photography. The shapes made by nature keep fascinating me. This is a part of an old dam. The tides and the scouring action of sand and pebbles made these beautiful sculptures. |

52. The beaches of NZ are very often strewn with wood. This wood comes most of the times from the interior and is transported to the sea by a river. Later on it washes ashore again. Usually it has been well scoured by the salt water and the sea. This piece I had put upright on a treetrunk that also had floated ashore. After a bit of moving around I got the right cloud background and a beautiful warm colour from the setting sun. The wood is about 12 inches high. |

51. One of the many beautiful bays on New Zealands eastcoast. With this kind of high-contrast photography it is very important to measure the light from the right spot. In this case it was taken from the wet beach in the bottom middle of the picture. That is about the average between the dark mountains and the sun-reflection on the waves. |

50. At a campsite close to Taupo there was a so-called Thermal Walk. Hot water and steam were coming up from the ground, sometimes as mudpools. (see also pictures nr. 50 en 51 under TRAVEL REPORT NZ-4) The owner advised us to go early in the morning. Because when it's cold the steamclouds are bigger. When the sun rose it was even more spectacular. |

49. With a campervan in NZ you can choose a spot at night were you expect to find nice scenery in the morning. We were lucky again. I had hoped for fog in the valley, but the beautiful cloud in the sky was literally a gift from heaven. New Zealand is called Aotearoa in Maori language, this means: "Land of the long white cloud." This picture was taken close to Rotorua. http://www.aotearoa.co.nz or http://www.aotearoa.co.nz/wood |

48. "Sneeuw en ijs nr. 3"
Port Burwell's lighthouse in the winter of 1969/1970. This is a small harbour on the shores of Lake Erie. The warm glow of the evening sun forms a nice contrast with the blue-reflecting snow and ice landscape. |

47. Lines in landscapes nr. 12. The S-shaped line which starts at the bottom left leads you as it were through the photograph. The horizontal lines on the hills are very striking in the NZ-landscape. They were made by sheep grazing on the steep slopes. In the more than one-and-half century (the first sheep were imported round 1844) that these animals have been living in NZ the millions of sheep feet have trampled out small terraces on the slopes. 46. "Water nr. 2" and "Stone nr. 2"
This picture was taken right after the previous one. In a round stone there was a small puddle. The water had partly dried up already. In the water the reflection of a tree and the sun. |

45. Via a small road you can partly drive up the slope of the volcano. At the parking-lot the top could not be seen due to fog and clouds. That means, waiting till the weather changes. So I looked for something else to photograph. Grass that had been flattened by the rain was lying on the edge of the stone footpath. Even very trivial things can look different if you isolate them from their surroundings by getting as close as possible. Actually this picture is shown upside down, because I didn't feel like sitting on my knees in the wet grass. Because the top has a bluish-grey colour you get an association with the blue sky. In my phantasy the grass is lava that's squirting up. When you look at this picture with the blue at the bottom, you will see it's less striking. |

44. "Trees nr. 8"
Taranaki early in the morning. We parked the previous night at this spot to get a good view of the mountain in the morning. At first we couldn't see anything due to the fog and the clouds. All of a sudden I could take this picture. A couple of seconds later the sun was shining brightly on the slope, then all at once the mysterious atmosphere had disappeared. The trees in the foreground give some extra depth to the picture. |

43. The Maori name for Mount Egmont (on the right) is Taranaki. This volcano will probably erupt again in the future. Around the volcano is one of the best areas for dairy farming in New Zealand. The Japanese are very fond of this mountain, because it resembles Mount Fuji in Japan. The weather phenomena close to mountains are always very interesting. The cloud formations can change by the minute. The light was measured from the left side of the left mountain. http://www.peakware.com/encyclopedia/peaks/egmont.htm |

42. "Trees nr. 7"
When you see these trees for the first time you think that they still bear fall leaves. In reality the twigs are coloured and the trees are completely bare. The low sunlight makes the trees stand out better against the shadows on the hills. This is Tolkien country. The films were shot in NZ for good reason. |

41. With this picture I tried to show how busy the New Zealand roads are ;-) This kind of landscape is typical for New Zealand. Hilly with winding roads that are usually well-maintained. We rented the camper from Vantastic Ventures. http://www.rozema-reizen.nl (only in Dutch)
